Sunflower Girl® Skincare: A Saluki Story, 25 Years in the Making

Southern Illinois University didn’t just shape my career — it changed my life. That may sound like a big statement, but in my case, it is simply the truth.

Twenty-five years ago, I arrived at Southern Illinois University from Russia as an exchange scholar for just three months. At the time, I was certain this would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — something extraordinary that would never happen to me again. Instead, it became the beginning of a much longer journey.

I stayed on as a graduate student and later spent more than fifteen years working at the SIU Foundation, collaborating closely with the SIU Alumni Association and witnessing firsthand the strength, loyalty, and generosity of the Saluki community. SIU is where I built my professional foundation, learned how institutions thrive through relationships, and developed a deep respect for purposeful, values-driven work. It is also where I met my husband, built my family, and put down roots that continue to grow.

Sunflower Girl® Skincare began much later in my life, initially as a personal hobby. In my early forties, I became deeply interested in skin health, aging, and skin physiology — not from a place of trends or beauty marketing, but from lived experience and curiosity. With encouragement and support from the SIU community, that quiet exploration gradually evolved into a small-batch skincare business rooted in intention, research, and respect for women’s skin.

Today, I am intentionally instilling a sense of connection, pride, and family roots within the SIU community in my children. I believe that belonging is something we cultivate — and that it is never too early, or too late, to feel connected to a place that has given you so much. Through my husband, whose family has deep roots at SIU, our children are growing up as part of that legacy — and if all goes as planned, they will one day attend SIU as fifth-generation Salukis, a point of deep and meaningful pride for our family.

Being selected as a vendor for Saluki Market feels like SIU coming full circle for me once again — this time supporting my work as an entrepreneur and helping carry my message and passion to fellow Salukis across the country. I am deeply grateful to be part of a platform that celebrates alumni stories, craftsmanship, and purpose-driven businesses.

Sunflower Girl® Skincare is, at its heart, a story of care, continuity, and community — and I’m honored to share it within the Saluki family.
